It All Starts With Props & Styling–My Thingies

Ever wonder what goes into the lovely photos that appear on various food sites?

Here’s the first part of the making of a food photograph.  First you decide what food you are going to shoot.  Then, you think of how to compose that photo.  Your first step is picking your props.  These are dishes, cutlery, bases like place mats, table cloths and coverings, and little thingies added to make an eye-pleasing pic.

Here’s just a small sampling of mine.  Some are items I just have around the house and kitchen.  Some I purchased entirely for photographing food.  Having white and solid-colored serveware is a MUST for most food photography.  Any chef will tell you that food is best presented on a white plate.

You don’t have to overspend on things you don’t have.  My favorite haunts for these items are dollar stores and yard sales.

Next installment, I’ll discuss the agony of composition 🙂
