Easy Hawaiian Rolls

Exactly like Kings Hawaiian rolls and so easy too!

I love Kings Hawaiian Rolls…I mean I REALLY love them…so much that I can eat practically a whole package in one sitting. There’s just something about the combo of the texture and the taste.

So easy and cheap you’ll never believe!

I’ve made other attempts at duplicating them, and they’ve been pretty good.  This is another one of my copycat recipes for them.  They are very good, but these are better. So good in fact, I cannot tell the difference.

The plus here is that they use very inexpensive ingredients so you don’t have to buy anything special.  If you don’t have bread flour, then use regular all-purpose.

Light and fluffy.  Just add butter….or not!  Good just by itself!

The pineapple juice is nice, but you don’t need it.  Water will do you here.

Easy Hawaiian Rolls #2

Exactly like Kings Hawaiian rolls and so easy too!
Prep Time3 hrs 30 mins
Cook Time45 mins
Total Time4 hrs 15 mins
Course: breads
Cuisine: American
Keyword: bread recipe, hawaiian rolls
Servings: 9
Calories: 230kcal
Author: Judith Hannemann

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water or pineapple juice
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp SAF yeast (aka bread machine yeast)
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 3 cups bread flour

Instructions

  • Place water (or pineapple juice) in a large bowl. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 10 minutes. If bubbles form, yeast is active and you may proceed.
  • Add the oil and salt; stir
  • Stir in flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. Turn out on floured surface and knead for 5-8 minutes or until dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place about 1 tsp of oil in the bottom of a deep bowl. Add the dough and coat the bottom of the dough with the oil; turn dough oil side up. Cover and let rise for 1-1 1/2 hours or until double in bulk
  • Stand mixer method:
  • Place water/pineapple juice in the bowl of a heavy-duty stand mixer. Add the sugar and stir. Sprinkle yeast over liquid. Let stand for 10 minutes. If bubbles form, you may proceed.
  • Attach dough hook to machine. Add the oil and the salt. Mix at low speed.
  • Add flour, one cup at a time, and knead for 3 minutes. Proceed as above.
  • Bread machine method:
  • Add ingredients as per manufacturer’s instructions. Set on dough cycle. When time is up, proceed to “shaping” instructions.
  • Shaping:
  • Lightly spray or grease a 9 x 9-inch pan.
  • Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface. Roll dough into a 9-inch log. Cut off 9 equal portions and form into balls. Place in pan, allowing space around each ball for rising.
  • Cover and let rise until double in bulk, about 30-45 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake rolls for 15-20 minutes or until internal temperature of rolls is 190 degrees F -OR- until when bottom of the rolls are tapped, it produces a hollow sound.
  • While still hot, brush tops of each roll with butter. NOTE: what I do is just rub the end of a stick of butter on each roll.

I absolutely love these rolls and have been searching for just *that* recipe (I can also inhale an entire package in two days…erm, not that anybody needs to know that, really)–I can't wait to try these when we have company over next time. Pinned!

I've been searching and searching too! I found it and I hear you about inhaling these things OMG!!!! I LOVE them!!! Lucky for my waistline, the King's brand is not available in my local store 🙂

YUM…I would eat all nine by myself! Can I use regular yeast? You know, some people don't have fancy bread machine stuff…lol!

I do eat all nine Lillian LOL…any yeast will do and in fact, next time you buy it, buy the bread machine variety–same price and you use slightly less. Two tsp as opposed to 2 1/4 of the regular kind. Plus it dissolves faster. I buy mine in the jar–unless I buy it in the brick pack–remember how they packed coffee that time? Sorta like that, then I stick it in the freezer after it's open. Lasts longer!

I've never thought of using pineapple juice before in my breads. Might have to make these soon.
Thanks for sharing at The Weekend Social. Looking forward to seeing what you have for next week

I grew up in Hawaii and ate my fair share of Hawaiian bread. I've also been on the search for the perfect Hawaiian bread recipe and will definitely give yours a try. I'm choosing you as my feature pick for this week's The Weekend Social that starts on Thursday. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Thanks Earlene–I'm not sure how these measure up to the real deal you get in Hawaii (since I was never there) but they sure do taste like Kings!!!

OH MY!!! I just purchased a bread machine a couple weeks ago and I am loving it. The recipes that came with it are good but seem some have way too many ingredients.
I found your recipe on Pinterest and today it blew me away!! THESE ARE AMAZING. So simple and only a few ingredients.
I just used the dough setting as you suggested and they came out perfect. Probably the best rolls I've ever had. I used Dole Pineapple juice and the flavor was perfect. Thanks so much!!

Aren't these wonderful Tina? I LOVE them. They're easy, taste GREAT and I always figure if it doesn't turn out well, the ingredients are all inexpensive–yeast things are always iffy in my drafty old house–which is why I discovered the bread machine!!!

Made these two days ago and they were a hit!! Can i double this recipe? I have a large dinner party coming up and I want to have enough 🙂 thank you!

I'm pretty sure you can Chels, but you might want to have a "test run" before your actual party! Better to be safe than sorry and I'm sure the "test subjects" won't go to waste LOL

These rolls are DA BOMB! The closest store to me that sells the Hawaiian rolls is about 25 miles away. I love to have them for breakfast, but the drive is an inconvenience (to say the least). I've just made my second batch. Throw everything in the bread machine, and you're almost there. So easy and SO DELICIOUS. Thank you!

  18. Judith Hanneman says

    February 23, 2015 at 2:10 pm

I've got the same problem!!! Since I inhale those things when I used to buy them, plus the gas $$ to get to the store and their high-ish cost, I'm glad I ran across a recipe that worked so well–and inexpensively too.

Good recipe..,.a bit thicker texture than Hawaiian rolls…I don't think I cooked mine long enough, and the flour was just a little overpowering….next time I'll try bread flour. Overall it was quite tasteful. Husband had no complaints and throughly enjoyed them whereas I can be too much of a critic hehe. Thanks for the recipe, can't get kings Hawaiian rolls now since moving to Australia.

Can I double this recipe for use in my bread machine using the dough setting? I really want to make these but I need more than 9 rolls for my Easter dinner…

Sure can! Someone upthread in the comments doubled it and they came out great!

Has anyone tried this recipe in a loaf pan? I love how this recipe is so easy to stir up!

  25. Judith Hanneman says

    May 9, 2015 at 3:15 am

It will work great made as a loaf LaDonna. Same temp but test for doneness after about 25-30 minutes.

The taste is fantastic, but the texture is a bit off on mine. Am I not kneed ing enough? It’s a bit “air hole”ish if that makes sense. I do not use a bread machine.

Not being a bread expert, I usually go to King Arthur’s site–www.kingarthurflour.com –to see why something isn’t quite right. It may have been that you let it rise too long…but I’m just guessing. It’s only recently I’ve began having some success with anything yeasty. And LOL at your description!!!
