Easy, economical and tasty

This is really tasty and I liked the idea of combining all of my favorite burger joint things in one economical casserole. Unfortunately, when I got a hanker on for this, I was out of regular frozen french fries, but I did have some crispy crowns in the freezer that substituted nicely.  In fact, I think it gave this casserole even more flavor.  Since they are just flattened tater tots in actuality, good ol’ tater tots can be used if you have them on hand.

Perfect comfort casserole

Velveeta and milk make instant cheese sauce in this.  If the meat looks as if it could use more “juice,” then just add a little more milk–especially if you like it saucy.  I also serve a cheese sauce with this.  The link will lead you to my cheeseburger ring recipe which has my speedy cheese sauce included.

Up close and crunchy

There is real cheese in this too, so you get a nice bite from the real cheddar cheese as well.  You can substitute real cheese for the Velveeta, but your sauce will separate.  This is why I tend to use Velveeta, even if it’s just a small chunk, in any cheddar cheese sauce.  It is a miracle that keeps the sauce from separating.  But since we rather LIKE Velveeta, I just go with using only that in this sauce.

Add bacon and some chopped pickle in the mix too if you’d like.  It only gets better!

I made this as soon as I saw it (right at dinner time). It was wonderful!! I didn't have velveta but used cheddar cheese and American cheese. I also added chopped tomatoes. We all loved it! Thank you!!

Glad you liked it! Real cheese *always* works. Reason I will use Velveeta many times is it doesn't separate when reheated.

    This recipe is outstanding.
Campbells cheddar chesse soup straight out of the can (left condensed) works good in place of Velveeta. You can also sometime find Velveeta in ready made sauce packets.
I season the hamburger with Lawrys seasoning salt and Lawrys pepper. Spike and Montreal Steak seasoning.

That’s an excellent substitution! I hope some readers in UK see this because they can’t get it there!
