No-Flea Dog Biscuits

Here’s a tasty way for Fido to keep the fleas off!  These dog biscuits contain brewers yeast, a natural flea repellent that happens to be good for your dog too! Hint–they LOVE brewers yeast too!

I admit I use regular methods for preventing fleas on my animals, but I also supplement that with brewers yeast and have for years!

Often I give them the brewers yeast tablets as a special treat. They go nuts for the taste too.  Brewers yeast has often been touted as a natural way to repel fleas. Apparently, it is secreted through the dog’s skin and fleas don’t like the odor that’s emitted.  You won’t smell anything though, only the fleas (or so it’s said).

Natural remedy for fleas

My vet told me once that brewers yeast is also good for the dog’s coat, so that’s an added benefit.

But whatever it does (or doesn’t do), dogs just love the stuff and you can use it as liberally as you like.

I use whole wheat flour, but you can use any flour you like as long as you get a rollable dough.

Substitute beef or chicken stock for the water too if you want.

I buy the powdered brewers yeast in my local health food store, and you should be able to find a big can of it in your natural/health food store too.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups oats
  • 1 cup powdered brewers yeast
  • 1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour or any flour
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment.
  • Place brewers yeast, oats, flour and cheese in a large bowl.
  • In a separate small bowl, beat egg. Add egg to flour mixture and stir well. Add only enough water to make a rollable dough.
  • Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut into desired shapes.
  • Bake for 30 minutes. Turn off oven and leave biscuits in there until oven is completely cool (this dehydrates them for storage).
  • Amount varies, but I got 2 1/2 dozen from this with a “medium” dog bone biscuit cutter.

Is there a substitute for Brewers Yeast, as my dog is allergic to it, and eggs?

Hi June–there’s none that I know of but check out my other dog biscuit recipes. There’s a few with egg in them, but most don’t contain it at all and you can basically use any flour–getting the rollable dough is the only thing to really achieve with them. So, is this recipe supposed to kill the fleas? If so, how long does it normally take to work?

Personally, I don’t rely on brewer’s yeast alone for flea prevention for my dogs. It’s supposed to be a natural repellant, but as to it’s killing properties, I can’t speak with any authority. Brewer’s yeast is just generally good for dogs and they love it. If your dog already has fleas, I wouldn’t rely on these biscuits to kill them. You’d need a commercial product used as directed to do that. The natural cycle of fleas is approximately 8 weeks, but you’d need 3 applications (3 months) to completely destroy the eggs.
