Slow Cooker Fruity BBQ Chicken |
Make this finger-lickin’ good BBQ chicken recipe right in your slow cooker. Yep, you can even use the crock pot to barbeque!
My friend Tara from Noshing With the Nolands has created a slow cooking monster in me ever since she told me her family wanted BBQ, but she didn’t want to trudge to her grill in sub-zero Canadian weather. So, she BBQ’d in her slow cooker. I found this fascinating and she had excellent results!
That planted the seed and I just HAD to see all the things my slow cooker could do. I was never much on crock pot fare though, because I’m not really into the taste of stuff that cooks all day. However, I have 3 crock pots, so go figure that one. But I decided I’m going to finally see what all the hype is.
Finger Lickin’ Good! |
I served this with my oven-baked steak fries. Truth is since I discovered this method for doing the fries, I haven’t eaten deep-fried since. They are DELICIOUS! You can find the simple directions here.
I didn’t pour ALL the sauce on the chicken. I held some back and served that in a dipping bowl. It tasted great on the potatoes!

Slow Cooker Fruity BBQ Chicken
Ingredients
- 3 lbs assorted chicken drumsticks and thighs
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
FRUITY BBQ SAUCE
- 1 cup high-quality BBQ sauce like Sweet Baby Ray's
- 1/2 cup apricot or peach preserves*
- 2 tsp dijon mustard
Instructions
- *Concord grape jelly would probably be just as good.
- Mix salt, pepper and garlic powder. Sprinkle on chicken and rub in well. NOTE: skin may be removed from chicken if desired. Place chicken in the bottom of a 6 or 7 quart slow cooker, try to get chicken in a single layer if possible. An oval slow cooker would be best here.
- Cover and set cooker to HI and cook for 3 hours or on LOW 6 hrs (I recommend cooking on HI).
- In a small bowl, mix all the Fruity BBQ Sauce ingredients. Set aside.
- Remove chicken from slow cooker and place on a plate. Drain juices from the slow cooker crock and wipe the crock dry with a paper towel. Place chicken back in the slow cooker. Pour HALF the sauce over the chicken. Cover and continue cooking on HI for an additional 1 hour or LOW and additional 2 hours.
- Remove chicken from slow cooker and brush with some more sauce (I reserved about 1/4-1/2 cup for dipping, but you can use it ALL if you wish). I popped the chicken under the broiler for a minute or 2 to crisp it a bit...but it's not necessary.
- Serve with oven-baked Steak Fries

I have a question. Want to try this I noticed the first part of the instruction says how long to cook the chicken but does not specify covered or uncovered.
Judith Hanneman says
Hi Lauri–yes, do cover it! Just like you were going to cook anything else in the crock pot. I will edit this so that's clear. Thanks!

Holy cow, Judith! That looks amazing! I love dark meat chicken in the crockpot since it stays moist and juicy. I definitely want to try this soon.
Judith Hanneman says
This is even good cold Andi!!!!

If I'm using skinless chicken, can I skip the step of draining it and just put the sauce on it in the beginning?
Judith Hanneman says
You'll still get a bit of liquid at the bottom jaqueline, and that might make it too soupy. A lot of people do add it right at the beginning, but I found that to be too watery. It'll still taste the same though, but the sauce may not cling.

Yeah, I would think that cold would be even better. To quote "Christmas in Connecticut," cold chicken is my weakness. 🙂
Judith Hanneman says
I gotta eat a lot cold Marc–plenty of leftovers here.

Hi, I want to try this, but I don't know where to buy the fruity bbq sauce. Can you please help me? Thank you.
Judith Hanneman says
Hi Rosabel–I used a store brand BBQ sauce that was equivalent to Sweet Baby Ray's. You add the fruit preserves (I did apricot, but use what you like here) to give it the fruity tang.
